Services

The Social Science of Climate Change Network (SSCCRN) offers many services. These include:

Formal and informal training
In order to address the social contexts of climate change, individuals and groups need to understand what tools they can apply, and how to undertake climate change work in social contexts. SSCCRN offers training, both formal and informal in the areas of conflict resolution, social impact assessment, adaptation and mitigation.

Applied research programs
SSCRN offers a suite of research opportunities. These include research projects within the areas of:
(i) adaptation
(ii) mitigation
(iii) local government responses to climate change
(iv) risk assessment
(v) risk perception studies
(vi) communicating climate change
(vii) fisheries and climate change
(viii) Indigenous peoples and climate change
(ix) adaptive management
(x) discourse analysis
(xi) oral history projects.

As opportunities arise, SSCCRN will build further research areas.

Postgraduate supervision and research
SSCCRN has partners within the academic and research sector including the Australian Maritime College, University of Tasmania, James Cook University, Australian National University, University of Adelaide, Melbourne University, University of Queensland and CSIRO.

Students interested in undertaking social science research in the area of climate change can apply to our supervisors register and apply to do post graduate research in the areas described above.

Internships
The SSCCRN offers an internship scheme. Individuals interested in undertaking a discrete social science research project may apply for an internship at the SSCCRN. Applicants may be students, or professionals seeking to build their expertise ro work experience in the area of climate change.

Applicants will then be matched with an appropriate industry partner to undertake a research project. Research projects will focus on areas of priority to industry and will build industry capacity to respond to climate change impacts.

Internships can be from one to three months depending on the type of project, the interest and expertise of the applicant, and type of industry partner involved.

Interested applicants should contact Dr. Melissa Nursey-Bray, at info@ssccrn.net for further details.

Information exchange
The Social Science for Climate Change Research Network (SSCCRN) is committed to facilitating information exchange about climate change. Communicating the issue of climate change is one of the biggest challenges facing society today.
SSCCRN periodically host seminars and workshops investigating and highlighting the important role of social science in climate change research and programs.

SSCCRN also facilitates e-conferences. Conducting an e-conference is an excellent way of undertaking networking, information exchange and obtaining peer reviewed publications in your field, while ensuring a minimal carbon footprint. SSCCRN is committed to supporting organizations to pioneer new ways of conducting and dissemination research We also advertise other e-conferences.

SSCCRN is also an affiliate of other programs that build on the linkages between science and social science in relation to climate change. For example SSCCRN is a member of WAS*IS an international network that examines how science and social science integrate in weather studies.

SSCCRN also keeps up to date information about climate change research by providing useful links to reports and Staff exchange.

SSCCRN undertakes to provide opportunities for staff to exchange with others in their field, and build cross institutional linkages in the area of climate change. In order to be eligible for a staff exchange, individuals must commit to undertaking a small research project that will build social capital in relation to responding to climate change issues.
